The Boston area can boast what’s arguably the world’s most dynamic life sciences economy, but its leading place in healthcare dates back much further.
It was 1846 when two Massachusetts General Hospital doctors, William T.G. Morton and John Collins Warren, used general anesthesia on a patient during a procedure for the first time. More than a century and a half ago, that use of ether was a pivotal, innovative moment in medicine.
Today’s accomplishments in healthcare more often center around software to help enroll patients in clinical trials or cutting-edge research for cancer treatments. The local people working on those endeavors — and more — are among the honorees for the inaugural Boston Business Journal Innovators in Healthcare.
