Understanding How the Inflation Reduction Act Impacts the Ecosystem

The recently passed Inflation Reduction Act contains some of the most significant changes to prescription drug pricing, reimbursement, and access we have seen in decades. By far, the biggest policy change is allowing Medicare to negotiate the price of drugs for the first time in the program’s history. A separate policy in the bill allows the federal government to penalize companies who raise the price of drugs faster than inflation. Initial estimates are that the various drug pricing provisions in the IRA will result in upwards of $300 billion less revenue to biopharmaceutical companies and dozens of new drugs not reaching patients in the next ten years.
While the impact of this legislation on commercial-scale biopharma companies is fairly clear, what is less understood is the downstream effects on emerging biotech companies who are seeking investments, partnerships, and acquisitions in the hope of one day having their science come to market.
