Keynote Speaker
R. Jude Samulksi, PhD
The MGB Gene and Cell Therapy Institute is pleased to announce that President, Chief Scientific Officer, and Co-Founder of AskBio, R. Jude Samulksi, PhD will be one of the keynote speakers at the MGB Gene and Cell Therapy Research Symposium.
Dr. Samulski is a world-renowned figure in gene therapy. He earned his Ph.D. in medical microbiology and immunology from the University of Florida, pioneering the use of AAV2 as a viral vector during his graduate years. This groundbreaking work led to the first FDA-approved gene therapy for Leber Congenital Amaurosis. Following post-doctoral training at Princeton, he continued his impactful research at the University of Pittsburgh, achieving the first use of AAV for gene delivery to the Central Nervous System, ultimately contributing to treatments for Canavan’s disease.
In 1993, he embarked on a transformative journey at the University of North Carolina, where he founded and led the UNC Gene Therapy Center for 25 years. During this time, he made significant contributions, including the development of self-complementary AAV vectors and chimeric AAV capsids for gene therapy.
Dr. Samulski has dedicated four decades to AAV research, with notable achievements in the treatment of rare disorders. He co-founded Bamboo Therapeutics, later acquired by Pfizer, where he played a pivotal role in advancing gene therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He also co-founded AskBio which is advancing gene therapy on all fronts for millions of patients. Dr. Samulski’s impact extends beyond the lab, as he has advised the FDA and received recognition from the American Society of Cell and Gene Therapy. His mission continues at the Columbus Children’s Foundation, focusing on AAV gene therapies for ultra-rare disorders. He holds numerous patents and has published over 350 articles in the field. Currently, he serves as a professor at UNC and remains at the forefront of gene therapy advancements.
