COVID-19: BioMaking Solutions – Dr. Mark Bathe, MIT Department of Biological Engineering, “Virus-like DNA Nanoparticle Vaccine for COVID-19”
Three coronaviruses have crossed the species barrier to infect humans to cause deadly pneumonia in recent years, SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and most recently SARS-CoV-2, causing COVID-19, which is an ongoing pandemic that has killed over 375,000 people worldwide as of June 1, 2020. To date, there is no approved vaccine against any human-infecting coronavirus. I will present our approach to enhancing the efficacy of subunit vaccines by formulating heterovalent immunogens in a multivalent, nanoparticulate form using virus-like DNA nanoparticles to enhance B cell receptor signaling for the production of broadly neutralizing antibodies for the current, and any future, coronavirus threat.
