SUMMARY:Seminar: Thalamic Reticular Nucleus Dysfunction in Neurodevelopmental Disorders
DESCRIPTION:The thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN)\, the major source of thalamic inhibition\, is known to regulate thalamocortical interactions critical for sensory processing\, attention and cognition. TRN dysfunction has been linked to sensory abnormality\, attention deficit and sleep disturbance across multiple neurodevelopmental disorders. Currently\, little is known about the organizational principles underlying its divergent functions. In this talk\, I will start with an example of how dysfunction of TRN contributes to attention deficit and sleep disruption using a mouse model of Ptchd1 mutation\, which in humans cause neurodevelopmental disorder with ASD. Building on these findings\, we further performed an integrative single-cell analysis linking molecular and electrophysiological features of the TRN to connectivity and systems-level function. We identified two subnetworks of the TRN with segregated anatomical structure\, distinct electrophysiological properties\, differential connections to the functionally distinct first-order and higher-order thalamic nuclei\, and differential role in regulating sleep. These studies provide a comprehensive atlas for TRN neurons at the single-cell resolution and a foundation for studying diverse functions and dysfunctions of the TRN. Finally\, I will describe the newly developed minimally invasive optogenetic tool for probing circuit function and dysfunction. \nThis is a Zoom webinar. Click here to join or copy and paste this link into your browser: https://mit.zoom.us/j/92153793477

SUMMARY:COVID-19: The Road Forward Gairdner Global Perspectives Panel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exploration of the science of coronavirus infections\, the urgent search for new drug therapies and new vaccines\, how to model the time course of pandemic outbreaks and the social and economic impact on vulnerable populations worldwide. \nWe bring together illustrious Canada Gairdner laureates\, alongside an outstanding Canadian scientist and previous Chair of the Gairdner Board of Directors\, to provide their unique insights into the pandemic and the hope for the future. \nQuarraisha and Salim Abdool Karim \nQuarraisha and Salim Abdool Karim are the founding leaders of the Centre for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA)\, Professors at Columbia University\, and Pro-Vice Chancellors at University of KwaZulu-Natal\, Durban\, South Africa. They are the 2020 John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award laureates for their discovery that antiretrovirals prevent sexual transmission of HIV\, laying the foundations for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and contributing to the reduction of HIV infection in Africa and around the world. Their scientific work has been amplified by their focus on the social and behavioral aspects of prevention\, transmission and treatment. \nMore information about Quarraisha and Salim Abdool Karim. \nD. Lorne Tyrrell \nLorne Tyrrell is the Founding Director\, Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology\, University of Alberta\, in Edmonton\, AB\, Canada and Chair Emeritus\, Gairdner Foundation. For four decades he has been a leading figure in Canadian health research and in understanding and addressing viral disease\, in particular hepatitis B and C. \nMore information about Lorne Tyrrell. \nChristopher Murray \nChristopher Murray is the Director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME)\, and Professor of Global Health\, University of Washington in Seattle\, WA\, USA.
