SUMMARY:Early Career Funding for Biomedical Research: Meet the Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation
DESCRIPTION:he Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation\, in partnership with the Office of Research and Foundation Relations\, will present a workshop to help acquaint researchers at BU with the Foundation’s early career funding programs in biomedical research. \nThe Foundation advances scientific discovery and human health by investing in Boston’s most promising early-career scientists and leading institutions as they work at the forefront of biomedical innovation. The Smith Family Awards Program for Excellence in Biomedical Research supports promising pre-tenure researchers as they establish their first independent lab ($300\,000 over three years). The Smith Family Foundation Odyssey Award program supports highly innovative pre-tenure researchers to pursue unorthodox inquiries ($300\,000 over two years).

SUMMARY:The Unexpected Drivers of Waste in Clinical Trial Manufacturing
DESCRIPTION:The period from preclinical through commercialization comes with a lot of unpredictability and challenges for all organizations. Although buffers are needed to meet the developmental needs and patient supply requirements\, a lot of waste in clinical manufacturing can be pro-actively avoided by using a more global approach\, better controlling your risk at every level\, and making data-driven decisions. \nIn this webinar\, we will focus on which decisions can cause overlooked drug waste and how biotechs and pharma organizations can make the most effective use of their manufacturing capabilities and budgets. \nJoin us to learn how:\n\n\nLocalized decisions can have very detrimental impacts on the global efficiency of your supply chain; \n\n\nGlobalizing and controlling buffers in an end-to-end way can help minimize waste; \n\n\nDecisions and processes that are often seen as fixed and unchangeable can be challenged and consequently yield considerable benefits; \n\n\nN-SIDE has been able to drastically increase usage rates\, therefore accelerating time to market and reducing clinical budgets through optimization\, facts and collaboration.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Imaging for Researchers: Mechanisms & Methods
DESCRIPTION:This online course is designed to give the researcher who might be new to imaging a better understanding of the current and future capabilities of common modalities for characterizing the brain\, as well as information on relevant practical considerations. The technologies discussed in this course are: \n\nElectroencephalogram (EEG)\nMagnetoencephalogram (MEG)\nFunctional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)\nQuantitative near-infrared spectroscopy (qNIRS)\nMagnetic resonance imaging (MRI)\n\nNeuroanatomical MRI\nDiffusion MRI of the brain\nFunctional MRI (resting state and task-based)\nMagnetic resonance spectroscopy of the brain\nCerebrovascular monitoring\n\n\n\nImaging provides an important window into in vivo brain structure and function and is therefore an ideal tool for human brain research. When considering which imaging technique best answers a research question\, it is important to think about fundamental mechanisms of interest and select the modality or combination of modalities that best captures them. \nFor each technology\, experts will discuss and demonstrate the structure\, operation\, and workflow of the machine; data collection and analysis processes; multi-machine approaches; research considerations and decision criteria; and research applications. The course will focus on the use of each of these technologies for brain research rather than for clinical application.

SUMMARY:Developing New Cancer Therapies: Patients as Partners
DESCRIPTION:Linnea Olson is a patient advocate\, activist\, blogger and artist. She has been a participant in six phase I clinical trials for ALK-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) – three of which led to FDA approval of new targeted therapies. Her experiences and wisdom have made her a trusted source of insight for countless patients\, researchers\, clinicians\, biotech and pharmaceutical companies\, and learners at Harvard Medical School. \nIn this special event\, we will premiere a brief video outlining Linnea Olson’s remarkable journey. This will be followed by a panel discussion in which Linnea will be joined by two senior drug development leaders whose therapies have played such an important part in Linnea’s story. Join us for a wide-ranging discussion on patient-centric drug discovery and development\, exciting advances in cancer treatments\, and living with cancer.

SUMMARY:Communicating the Future: Engaging the Public in Basic Science
DESCRIPTION:On July 27-28\, 2021\, SciPEP will convene a virtual conference exploring the unique characteristics of the relationship between the public and basic research\, drawing from the experience and expertise of our colleagues in the science and science communication communities. Communicating the Future: Engaging the Public in Basic Science will explore why the public and basic science should be connected and what current communication and engagement efforts are taking place\, including the challenges and opportunities in this work. Ultimately\, we intend to identify how scientists and professionals can work to engage the public with basic research as effectively as possible. \nThe conference program will be organized around the exploration of the why\, what and how of the relationship between the public and basic science. The following aspects will be explored throughout: \nScholarship (e.g. communications research) – whether and how it can be applied to public engagement practice\, and identification of new research questions; \nTraining – public engagement skills development for scientist-communicators and the communication professionals who work with them; \nEngagement practice – activities or programs that provide opportunities for mutual learning or exchange of ideas between scientists and members of the public; \nJustice\, equity\, diversity\, and inclusion in public engagement; and \nEvaluating the effectiveness of public engagement activities and programs. \nWhat we discuss and learn at this conference will also inform future directions of SciPEP and the resources and training we propose to develop for basic scientists. \nPlenary \nHow do we move forward from here? \nAn astrophysicist\, a political scientist\, and science journalist turned college dean walk into a public engagement conference\, and… what comes next? These thought leaders will reflect on the conference and look to the future\, including identifying research gaps and resource needs for the future of communicating basic science. \nSpeakers \nMariette DiChristina\, Boston University \nBrian Nord\, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory \nRoger Pielke Jr.\, University of Colorado \nRegistration: https://www.accelevents.com/e/SciPEP2021
