SUMMARY:ETH Meets Boston 2019
DESCRIPTION:Description\nRETHINK Drug Discovery\nRecent advances in chemical synthesis\, biological testing\, and artificial intelligence (AI) allow for greater automation in the drug discovery process. AI systems that generate novel design suppositions\, as well as\, cope with multiple design objectives provide a basis for further automation in some aspects of drug discovery. Automation could potentially accelerate timeframes for compound design and optimization. It could also enable better decision making in early-stage pharmaceutical discovery that translates into late-stage clinical validation. However\, such approaches also raise considerable conceptual\, technical\, and organizational challenges. \nThis symposium aims to address the latest advances of this rapidly progressing field of science\, by bringing together leading researchers to present the state-of-the-art in drug discovery. Together they will make daring predictions surrounding the possibilities and limitations of drug discovery using machine intelligence. \nProgramme and further information

SUMMARY:Teaching Old Bacteria New Tricks
DESCRIPTION:Overview: \n  \nKristala L. J. Prather\, Arthur D. Little Professor of Chemical Engineering\, MacVicar Faculty Fellow at MIT\, will present the sixteenth lecture in the series\, “Thinking Out Loud: Deciphering Mysteries of our World and Beyond.” \n  \nAbout the Lecture: \n  \nBiology is an exquisite chemist\, each cell comprised of numerous chemical structures. Microbes can be engineered to reroute and extend biosynthetic pathways to make molecules for human use\, ranging from drugs to materials. Yet\, biology is also designed for reproduction\, each cell aiming to make more of itself. Come learn how Kris balances these competing objectives to teach old bacteria some new tricks. \n  \nAbout the Series: \n  \nScientists and engineers are often perceived as living intellectual lives that are mysterious — simultaneously wondrous and arcane. The Brown University Presidential Colloquium Series\, Thinking Out Loud: Deciphering Mysteries of Our World and Beyond\, showcases profoundly creative and accomplished scholars who not only tackle some of the biggest “Big Questions” there are\, but also skillfully communicate their inner visions to broad audiences. Like last year\, this year’s Thinking Out Loud Presidential Colloquium Speakers consider a wide range of urgent\, pervasive questions. Why is speech so rare and what’s it got to do with genes? If you can compute it to see it\, can you be it? Is arthritis really a life sentence? Can understanding then tiniest splicers lead to better health? Please join us to hear these very special minds Think Out Loud. \n  \nRegistration Information: \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public. The auditorium will open at 5:00 PM for seating. Guests are asked to arrive to the auditorium no later than 5:20 PM. At 5:20 PM pre-registered guests are no longer guaranteed seating and all available seats will be open to general admission. SUMMARY:Alan Alda- Communicating Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nExperience The Alda Method™ \nA Transformative Communication Workshop\n \nDuring his 11 years hosting the PBS television series Scientific American Frontiers\, Alan Alda realized that the conversational approach he took in interviewing scientists led to a surprisingly spontaneous and vivid presentation of their work. Using improvisational techniques he had learned in 50 years of acting on stage on on-screen\, Alda devised The Alda Method™. Since 2009\, the Alda Center has used this training methodology to improve the communication skills of thousands of scientists and health professionals throughout the world. \nThis interactive session introduces participants to general principles in how to craft short\, clear\, conversational statements\, intelligible to non-scientists\, about what you do and why it matters. The session consists of an interactive presentation and discussion on interpreting technical material using examples and analogies to illuminate unfamiliar concepts to your audience. This workshop will address problems and solutions in public interactions as well as peer-to-peer communication. Participants will be actively engaged in improvisation exercises and will practice clarity in speaking to non-scientists about their work. \nThe Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University advances science and medicine through training in clear and vivid communication. The center envisions a world that recognizes the wonder and value of science. They value authenticity\, honesty\, integrity\, collaboration\, continuous improvement and commitment to excellence. \nMore information can be found at https://www.aldacenter.org/get-started/about-us \nPizza will be served at 1PM and the workshop will start at 1:15PM

SUMMARY:Biorelevant? 2019
DESCRIPTION:A 1-dygn* symposium to discuss and debate biorelevant assays in Pharmaceutical Science \nWe are proud to announce a 3rd scientific conference in a series started in 2016. This conference was inspired by the success of the previous two events and by numerous conversations with our friends and colleagues in pharmaceutical industry and academia. They told us how valuable it would be to have an affordable scientific conference dedicated to biorelevant in vitro / in vivo measurements. \nThis conference will bring together scientists who work on formulations that increase uptake of the drugs as well as develop models\, instruments and methods that realistically represent complex biological systems. \nThe meeting will be held at Boston Harvard Club Downtown and will start on October 2nd\, 2019 with a keynote lecture by Prof. Kiyohiko Sugano (Ritsumeikan University\, Shiga\, Japan) followed by a reception and gala dinner. The main conference will take place the following day. \n* useful Swedish word meaning a period of 24 hours starting at any time of day. \nThe cost to attend will be US $ 475.00 + fees. Please register to reserve the space. \n\nWednesday\, October 2nd\, 2019 \nThe symposium will open with a keynote lecture by Kiyohiko Sugano\, a professor at the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Ritsumeikan University\, Shiga\, Japan) whom many of you may know from his previous career at Pfizer and Chugai (Roche) and as an author of the book “Biopharmaceutical Modelling and Simulations: Theory\, Practice\, Methods\, and Applications”.\nThe lecture will be followed by a welcome reception and a 3-course gala dinner. \n\nThursday\, October 3rd\, 2019 \nA one day conference of thought-provoking presentations. We are compiling a lineup of exciting speakers from the pharmaceutical industry and academia with the names and affiliations to be posted on this page shortly. For a preliminary agenda for this event\, click the link here. \nThe final agenda will be published as soon as it becomes available.\nThe conference will finish at 5:30 pm \n\nRegister Now \nPreliminary Agenda
