SUMMARY:Virtual Film Screening and Q&A: From Controversy to Cure
DESCRIPTION:Through our Virtual Screening Room\, you can rent films curated by the Coolidge team\, while helping to support the Coolidge during this unprecedented time. \nFrom Controversy to Cure is a documentary film chronicling the biotech boom in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. Get the inside story behind the contentious debate about genetic engineering that erupted in the city of Cambridge in the summer of 1976\, pitting scientist against scientist and citizen against citizen. And discover how the unlikely mix of science and engineering\, politics\, the space race\, and urban renewal transformed Kendall Square into one of the world’s most extraordinary innovation clusters—a community now on the front lines of the battle against Covid-19. \nPlus\, join us  for a special virtual Q&A on Tuesday\, August 25 at 8pm EST featuring Joe McMaster (Producer and Director) and the following scientists: David Baltimore (Founding Director\, Whitehead Institute for Biological Research\, Former MIT Professor of Biology)\, Harvey Lodish (Founding Member\, Whitehead Institute for Biological Research\, MIT Professor of Biology\, Co-Founder of Genzyme)\, Nancy Hopkins (MIT Professor of Biology\, Emerita)\, Phillip Sharp (MIT Institute Professor\, Nobel Laureate\, Cofounder of Biogen)\, and Sangeeta Bhatia (MIT Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science).

SUMMARY:MassBio Virtual Mixer Featuring Synthace
DESCRIPTION:Join MassBio for another Virtual Networking Mixer! Come interact with other MassBio members from the comfort of wherever you are! We will hear briefly from Synthace on lab automation and digital strategies for Biopharma R&D\, and we will divide into breakout rooms for three rounds of networking. Synthace will provide questions between rounds to spark further discussion. \nWhat members are saying about these events: “This was the best Zoom meeting I’ve had since the pandemic! I’m thrilled that you put this on and I would jump at the opportunity to do another. It was overly refreshing to meet new groups of people in a small room moderated by a MassBio person. The format was great. Please do this again!” \nDetails for accessing the meeting will be emailed to you the day prior. Users that join the Zoom meeting from the Zoom Mobile App can participate in breakout rooms. Users that join using Chromebooks/Chrome OS or Zoom Rooms are unable to join breakout rooms. \nMassBio Members only. Registration is required. \nInterested in sponsoring a virtual mixer? Contact Lea Cherchia for more information. \nMassBio makes every effort to accommodate our entire community at each of our events. Please let us know at least 3 days in advance of the event if you require special accommodations\, such as captioning.

SUMMARY:The Dark Side of Science: Misconduct in Biomedical Research
DESCRIPTION:Science builds upon science. Even after peer-review and publication\, science papers could still contain images or other data of concern. If not addressed post-publication\, papers containing incorrect or even falsified data could lead to wasted time and money spent by other researchers trying to reproduce those results. Several high-profile science misconduct cases have been described\, but many cases are yet undetected. Elisabeth Bik is an image forensics detective who left her paid job in industry to search for and report duplicated and manipulated images in biomedical articles. She has done a systematic scan of 20\,000 papers in 40 journals and found that about 4% of these contained inappropriately duplicated images. In her talk she will present her work and show several types of inappropriately duplicated images. In addition\, she will show how to report scientific papers of concern\, and how journals and institutions handle such allegations. \nSPEAKER BIO\n\nAfter receiving her PhD in Microbiology at Utrecht University in The Netherlands\, Elisabeth Bikworked 15 years in the lab of David Relman in the School of Medicine at Stanford on the microbiomes of humans and marine mammals. In May 2014\, she founded Microbiome Digest\, an almost daily compilation of scientific papers in the rapidly growing microbiome field. From 2016-2019\, she worked at two microbiome startup companies\, uBiome and Astarte Medical. In March 2019\, she left her job to become a science integrity volunteer and occasional consultant. She can often be found discussing science papers on Twitter at @MicrobiomDigest\, writing for her blog ScienceIntegrityDigest or searching the biomedical literature for inappropriately duplicated or manipulated photographic images and plagiarized text. Her work has been recently featured in Nature: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-01363-z

SUMMARY:Rebooting Your Research Program
DESCRIPTION:This café discussion will address how academic researchers can strategize to restart their research projects after the abrupt halts due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. While faculty and students across the nation are all navigating this pandemic together\, our speakers have experience working through a similar unexpected stop and restart due to other major disruptors such as Hurricane Katrina and the Federal shutdown. The panelists will provide useful insight to navigate our current situation\, including how to maximize this interim time\, logistical strategies to prepare for re-entry\, managing expectations and the role of institutional leaders\, and maintaining productivity while working through emotional trauma. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in live Q&A during the event. \nSpeakers:\nDr. Sylvia Carey-Butler\, Chief Diversity Officer\, Kennesaw State University (former Assistant Provost and Dean of Honors at Dillard University in New Orleans\, LA)\nDr. Mary Crowe\, Associate Provost of Experiential Education\, Professor of Biology\, Florida Southern College (former Director of Center for Undergraduate Research & Associate Professor of Biology\, Xavier University of Louisiana)\nDr. Anthony St. Leger\, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Immunology University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (former Postdoctoral Fellow at NIH National Eye Institute) \nModerator:\nDr. Irene Aninye\, Senior Program Associate\, AAAS Research Competitiveness Program
