SUMMARY:Women on Boards Getting On and Adding Value
DESCRIPTION:Program Overview \nProviding Women Executives with Direction\, Tools\, and Approaches for Attaining a Seat on Health Care and Related Industry Boards \nGender disparity on boards of directors is well recognized and documented\, whether in the for-profit\, non-profit\, or government sectors. In the United States\, fewer than 20% of corporate board directors are women. Nearly 80% of venture capital firms have never had a woman represent them on the board of one of their portfolio companies. Yet studies show that companies with women on their boards make decisions that better protect company value and performance. \nProfoundly accomplished and qualified women have an interest in attaining positions on boards of directors and then assuming leadership roles on these boards\, but may be unclear how to successfully secure these appointments. Women on Boards: Getting on and Adding Value will put you on a productive path towards attaining a governance position in health care by focusing on the strategies and competencies that will help you succeed at being a first-rate board member\, preparing you for the challenges you will face\, and providing direction\, tools\, and approaches for attaining a board seat. \nThis is a Must-attend Program for Women Seeking Board Positions \nThis program will feature faculty who are highly successful women board members and other experts in the field. You will join other high-performing\, accomplished\, and ambitious women who have already achieved much in their careers and who desire to take their talent\, leadership\, and executive skills to the next level by serving on boards in health care and related industries. As a participant\, you will also have the opportunity to develop a personalized action plan to seek and obtain a board directorship. \nThis highly interactive course will use case studies and experiential sessions to prepare you for directorship and start you on the path to being a sought-after candidate. You will expand your ability to evaluate board opportunities based on your own preferences and cultural fit\, learn to communicate effectively in the language of boards\, and gain critical knowledge and skills you will need to be effective. \nWomen on Boards of Directors \nOrganizations with women in leadership positions perform better than those that don’t. They surpass others in social responsiveness\, sustainability\, and financial performance. Recent evidence also indicates that companies with female board members are more successful than those without women\, a key concern for organizational competitiveness.1 As a participant in this program\, you will: \n\nLearn the essential legal\, regulatory\, and operating knowledge you will need to serve on boards of directors\nDevelop a deep understanding of your roles and responsibilities as an effective board member\nConnect with\, and learn from\, women who have achieved success as board members\nDevelop an individual action plan to seek and secure a position on a board\n\nCourse WebsiteHarvard T.H. SUMMARY:Debt\, Dignity\, and Health Care: Guaranteeing Health Rights and Universal Health Coverage
DESCRIPTION:Online Viewing\nIn light of the rapidly developing COVID-19 outbreaks\, Harvard University has restricted on-campus events. As a result\, we will not be allowing in-person attendance at this event. Instead\, the event will be available for viewing online. To ensure that you will receive access to the livestream and be kept up to date on any changes to the event\, register now. We will send out a link to the livestream of the event to all registrants three days before the conference. \nHosting events\, even ones that are largely virtual\, is a constantly moving target these days and we appreciate your patience and flexibility as we fine tune our approach. In the meantime\, we hope you all stay well. \nDescription\nEach year in low- and middle-income countries thousands of people are detained in hospitals for non-payment of medical bills\, despite the fact that such detention is a violation of national and international law. Hospital detention for nonpayment of bills disproportionately affects the most vulnerable people\, including post-partum women. \nIn the US\, medical debt manifests itself in other ways\, including bankruptcy\, litigation to garnish wages\, and foregone care.  In both contexts\, these scandals are the result of failures of financing\, priority-setting\, and legal oversight. \nWithout addressing these systemic issues\, a “human right to health care” will remain a hollow slogan\, as will political promises to achieve universal health coverage. \nThis event will feature Robert Yates of Chatham House\, which has conducted an in-depth investigation of the global phenomenon of hospital detentions. Additional panelists will address manifestations of predatory lending and surprise medical fees in the United States\, the ethical imperatives of financing and priority setting for UHC in general\, and the implications for thinking about health care as a human right. \nAgenda\n9:00 – 9:05am\, Welcome and Introduction\n\nAlicia Ely Yamin\, Senior Fellow in Global Health and Rights\, The Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy\, Biotechnology\, and Bioethics\, Harvard Law School\n\n9:05 – 9:45am\, Keynote Address\n\nRobert Yates\, Director\, Global Health Programme and Executive Director\, Centre for Universal Health\, Chatham House\n\n9:45 – 10:30am\, Debt in the American Health Care System\n\nWendi C. SUMMARY:The International Leadership Development Program for Physicians
DESCRIPTION:Develop the knowledge and skills you need to effectively lead your health care organization. \nPhysicians are often selected for senior leadership positions based on clinical expertise. No matter the setting\, these expanded roles require knowledge of critical management skills and leadership practices\, which are not typically part of physician training. \nThis executive education program brings together a peer group of physician leaders from a variety of health care settings around the world who face similar challenges. Harvard experts and industry leaders provide focused leadership and management training\, ensuring participants are prepared to direct change and drive value within their organizations and communities. \nDuring this highly interactive course\, participants will engage with each other and expert faculty in small groups\, experiential activities\, and full-class discussions\, allowing for an open exchange of ideas to address the challenges inherent in creating a healthy population\, quality health care\, and maintaining cost effectiveness. \nAs a participant\, you will: \n\nDevelop a deeper awareness of your own leadership strengths and development opportunities\nEnhance your strategy\, negotiation\, conflict management\, peer and team management and other key leadership skills\nExpand your understanding of responsibilities and options as a manager of a  clinical department\, service\, or program and as a senior institutional leader\nLearn strategies and tactics to lower costs and improve operations while increasing quality and safety\nAdvance knowledge and skills in the art and science of improvement\, allowing each participant the opportunity to immediately apply the skills they learn to a selected improvement project during the program\nVisit and engage with change agents in high performing health care delivery organizations in the greater Boston area\nAll while innovating and developing new and better ways of delivering care to meet the needs of patients and employees\n\nYou will also have the opportunity to learn from the Harvard case-based style of learning\, which provides a deep understanding of how leadership concepts apply to everyday situations in settings around the world. \nImprove Health Care\, Experience\, and Value \nAs part of the program\, each participant will identify and develop a plan for an improvement project connected to her or his organization’s business plan. Each participant will identify a key area of change prior to the start of the program\, submit the idea to faculty for review\, and actively work on the project during the program and beyond. \nThe improvement project may be in any one of three categories: \n\nImproving quality of care and services\nReducing costs while maintaining or improving quality\nExpanding patient or customer satisfaction with the development of new services or innovative ways of providing existing services\n\nThroughout the program you will work with faculty and participant colleagues to refine and further develop your project\, so that you can implement the project when you return home. Whether you work at a public health delivery site\, a government agency\, or another setting\, this collaboration will enable you to move forward with an actionable plan to improve performance. \nThe design of this program allows participants to achieve results by immediately applying the skills they learn to everyday work experiences. This combination of theory applied to daily work makes the program unique and provides a foundation for making improvements long after the program is completed. \nHarvard faculty in the program will assist you before and during the program\, guiding you through the steps required for successful change. You will work with Harvard faculty and your peers to advance your implementation goals by applying learning from the classroom in the context of your home environment. \nLearn from Experts in the Field \nThis applied program is designed and led by Harvard Chan School faculty who are recognized experts in improving health care in diverse settings around the world. The faculty will work with you on how learnings are applicable and tailorable to your specific health care setting. You will leave this program with the tools and strategies to be a more effective manager and leader and to make a greater impact on executing successful change when you return home. Topics explored during this program include: \n\nEvidence-based decision making\nFinancial analysis and cost control\nGenerating and sustaining innovation\nLeadership\nCreating and managing change\nNegotiation\nTeam building and performance\nOrganizational strategy\nPatient safety and engagement\nQuality improvement methods and tools\n\nAs a participant\, you will visit a high performing health care delivery organization that serves a diverse population in the Greater Boston area. Through this visit\, you will meet with successful innovators to experience how highly effective leadership can improve care\, health\, and value. This is an unparalleled opportunity to discuss the issues you face as a health care leader with colleagues and experts who are meeting these challenges. \nCourse WebsiteHarvard T.H. SUMMARY:Webinar: The Modern Mentor
DESCRIPTION:Mentorship has transformative power. In today’s business world\, it has proven to be a critical element of success by getting people in positions of influence actively supporting\, sponsoring and guiding the careers of women as they progress through their careers\, particularly at pivotal decision points. However\, asking someone to mentor you and managing that relationship could be at times nerve-wracking. \nWCT is excited to offer a webinar that will help mentors and mentees achieve the most from any mentorship engagement. Fiona Gao\, a global marketing leader\, and Angela Brown\, President and CEO of Moneris\, recently participated in the WCT Protégé Project. Based on their experience\, they have released a white paper entitled “The Modern Mentor: Reimagining the Interconnectedness of Women in Business\,” which provides excellent advice for those in a mentorship or sponsorship relationship. \nDate: April 15\, 2020\nTime: 9am-10am PST\nRegister: here

SUMMARY:Responding to COVID-19: Opportunities for All Researchers to Engage
DESCRIPTION:Right now\, all eyes are on an urgent science issue and its effects on our society. While everyone has a role to play in reducing the spread of the virus\, scientists have unique opportunities to respond to the crisis in impactful ways. For example\, some scientists might volunteer their lab or data analysis skills. Regardless of discipline\, researchers may find opportunities to pivot their research agenda to address timely and relevant questions. And others might serve as voices for science to amplify evidence\, reduce the spread of misinformation\, and advocate for science-informed approaches to managing the pandemic. This online panel discussion will include researchers from different disciplines who will share ideas for scientists looking to respond in the current moment.

SUMMARY:Special LINUS Report: Major Updates on Scientific Progress Amidst a Global Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Having embarked on a longitudinal study to understand the impact of Coronavirus across life sciences\, we have identified four phases for how the pandemic will cause disruptions to the industry. Now\, with a second major data-collection time point\, and over 2\,000 respondents\, we have found major updates on what the life science community is thinking\, feeling and doing as coronavirus continues to affect our realities and shapes productivity. In this next wave of our research\, we will reveal the magnitude of the disruption to productivity\, the progress of workplace transitions\, and the developing sentiment felt across the industry.
