SUMMARY:Biotech Networks Scientific Speed Networking
DESCRIPTION:The Biotech Networks 2024 US Tour is headed back to Boston May 14th during the CHI PEGS conference. We’ve chosen a new venue\, Lord Hobo\, which is very convenient to the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in the new(er) Seaport area. Our Boston events are growing in size and we’ve outgrown our previous venue. We’ll have a full indoor buyout of Lord Hobo\, with room to expand onto the patio. \nWe are also implementing a new tiered pricing structure to make our events more sustainable. The base registration is $35\, with all those currently working in sales or as consultants (even sole proprietors) paying $60 to attend. We need this change to make sure the events are sustainable. The event is still an excellent deal for all\, with a casual dinner\, drink ticket\, and our patent-pending Scientific Speed Networking™\, where we take the work out of networking. \n  \nGet your ticket now!

SUMMARY:Navigating the Academic Journey: Empowering Postdocs on the Path to Tenure Track Success
DESCRIPTION:While women have achieved parity in earning doctoral degrees\, a noticeable gender gap persists in academia\, where women continue to face challenges in securing tenure positions\, gaining access to publication opportunities\, and attaining leadership roles. Join Dr. Sang Won Park and Dr. Priyadarshini Kachroo for a Panel Discussion as they share their journeys and commitment to mentoring women scientists. Delve into an insightful conversation and discover tips and tricks for a successful faculty application. Covered topics include chalk talk\, effective grant writing strategies\, and navigating negotiations in your academic career. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS: \nDr. Sang Park is an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston\, MA\, where she also serves as the Principal Investigator of her laboratory located at Boston Children’s Hospital. In her role\, Dr. Park leads a team of researchers and oversees various scientific investigations within her field of expertise\, which specifically focuses on glucose metabolism. Dr. Park’s research centers around studying the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of type 2 diabetes\, with a particular emphasis on unraveling the complexities of insulin signaling pathways in the context of obesity. In addition to her research endeavors\, Dr. Park has a strong passion for mentoring. Since 2021\, she has actively engaged in mentoring initiatives such as AWIS (Association for Women in Science) and HGWISE (Harvard Graduate Women in Science and Engineering)\, where she dedicates her time to providing guidance and support to aspiring women scientists. Dr. Park is also a certified professional coach and aims to empower and facilitate the growth and success of fellow researchers in the scientific community\, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for their professional development. She is a member of JCSW (Joint Committee on the Status of Women). Her passion lies in fostering the growth and success of fellow women in the scientific realm\, contributing to the advancement of diversity and inclusivity in scientific pursuits. \nDr. Kachroo is an Instructor in Medicine and Associate Scientist in the Channing Division of Network Medicine (CDNM) at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School (BWH & HMS). Dr. Kachroo has led various studies by utilizing multiple large-scale\, well-characterized population-based cohorts\, biobanks\, and clinical trial data through novel computational approaches using multi-omic integration (whole genome\, metabolome\, transcriptome\, methylome\, quantitative trait loci – QTLs). Her research centers on studying gene-environment interactions and sex differences across the life-course for lung diseases and other complex inflammatory health conditions. In addition to contributing to research\, Dr. Kachroo has been actively involved in teaching and mentoring responsibilities for the next generation of experts in the field and participates in diversity\, equity\, and inclusion initiatives around the Harvard community and beyond. Being a woman in STEM\, she finds immense joy in counseling early-career professionals\, especially\, providing guidance and support to fellow women for their career development. In the past\, Dr. Kachroo has worked closely with the Advocacy and Communications committee and was the co-director of the Mentoring Circles program for postdocs at the BWH. She began volunteering for the Events Committee with MASS AWIS in 2023.

SUMMARY:Closing Out Your Research: Managing Data Transfer Between Collaborators
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge transfer refers to sharing or disseminating knowledge and providing inputs to problem-solving. When employees leave\, they take their skills and institutional knowledge with them. Capturing their knowledge and research outputs is essential to the success of future users. \nThis session will present the knowledge transfer process and what to document at the point of employee offboarding. We will explore how individuals collect\, organize\, access\, store and share project data in order to facilitate reuse and ongoing project work. \nInstructors: Julie Goldman\, Research Data Services Librarian\, Countway Library\nSarah Marchese\, Senior Research Data Management Analyst\, HMS Research Computing

SUMMARY:Variant to Function Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 19\, 2024\n9:00 am – 7:00 pm\nMerkin Lobby and Auditorium \nLarge-scale human genetic studies have succeeded in identifying hundreds of thousands of variants associated with human diseases and traits. One of the grand challenges on the frontier of human genomics and health is to pioneer new scalable paradigms and technologies to systematically link these many variants to cellular programs and gene regulation networks driving complex disorders. This will enable a deep understanding of the genetically-anchored biological programs affected in diseases\, lay the foundation for a new generation of rationally designed medicines\, and benefit patients and societies across the globe. The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Genomic Mechanisms of Disease is thrilled to host a symposium highlighting some of the important work and progress ongoing across the vibrant Broad Institute community in this domain. Please join us for an exciting day of science and discussions around this topic. \nCo-chaired by Melina Claussnitzer and Kasper Lage \n  \nLearn more and register!

SUMMARY:Science Communication in a Crisis
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be offered at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (January 30\, 2024) and at MIT on (February 1\, 2024). \nThe twenty-first century has seen an increase in extreme weather events\, large-scale environmental disasters\, and global health pandemics. Although science has enormous value to decision-makers during such crises\, the disconnect between scientists and those who respond to and are affected by such events is enormous. \n  \nIn this workshop\, we will identify the principal challenges that scientists face when communicating with different stakeholder groups\, offer advice on how to navigate the maze of competing interests\, and deliver actionable science when the clock is ticking. \n  \nThe lead instructor will be Chris Reddy\, Senior Scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and faculty member of the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography\, and recent author of “Science Communication in a Crisis: An Insider’s Guide”. \n  \nEmail Chris Reddy (creddy@whoi.edu) to Register.
