SUMMARY:CANARY
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Alex Rivest once studied the brain circuits underlying episodic memory formation Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Now the Boston native has taken to the big screen to change the way the public sees scientists. \n“We’ve all just lived through a moment when the world stopped because society could not grapple with science. This is a problem for an enterprise that is so fundamental to our understanding of where we belong in the universe and how to navigate a better\, more sustainable future\,” Dr. Rivest tells Science In Boston. \n“I set out to create more heroes in science and elevate more scientists by telling some of the most amazing stories of curiosity\, overcoming seemingly impossible odds\, and bravery beyond what any of us can imagine. When I left academia\, I set out to change the way science is seen in the media.” \nCANARY is coming to the Boston Common Theater for one night only. Support Dr. Rivest next week on September 20th at 7:30 pm.

SUMMARY:RegSci Forum “An Inflection Point for High-Quality Diagnostic Tests in Oncology”
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: \nDr. Brian Alexander\, CEO Foundation Medicine \nAbout the talk: \nThe evolution of precision cancer care—the practice of matching the right patient to the right treatment at the right time—has advanced care significantly in recent years. We have made tremendous progress in fighting cancer using insights from our increased understanding of the genomic mutations underlying the more than 100 different types of cancer. But precision cancer care can only be as good as the quality of the tests used to guide diagnosis and treatment. Today\, we are at an inflection point where we have an opportunity to prioritize the development and availability of high-quality tests so patients and physicians can receive accurate and reliable information allowing them to confidently inform a diagnosis\, disease progression and treatment options. Regulatory reforms that are fundamentally flawed and disincentivize the development of high-quality tests are not in the best interest of patients.

SUMMARY:FSHD University – Epic Bio’s FSHD Program
DESCRIPTION:Epic Bio\, a San Francisco based therapeutics company\, is developing a gene therapy medicine specifically for FSHD patients. The new product\, termed EPI-321\, leverages a CRISPR-based platform to precisely find and fix the specific issue in the genome that causes FSHD. It works by restoring a process called methylation to repair the root cause of the disease without altering the DNA sequence. EPI-321 is an AAV-based gene therapy product delivered one time via intravenous infusion.

SUMMARY:Shifting Your Mentality From Discovery to Development
DESCRIPTION:You’ve successfully taken the risks and done the research to turn your abstract thought into something physically real! \nAs Robert Redford’s character famously said at the end of The Candidate: “What do we do now?” Transitioning from research to development is the goal of every biotech company\, but there are also many common misunderstandings and misconceptions about what this shift entails. The costs (it’s expensive) and timelines (it takes a long time)\, onboarding new team members\, successfully doing both the R and the D at the same time\, and regulatory aspects of the change are among the things that must be understood and executed. \nApproaching this topic through the lens of today’s difficult funding environment and longer time horizons\, panelists will bring a breadth of experiences to detail best practices\, answer common (and uncommon) questions\, cover anticipated business challenges\, and likely tell a few horror stories.
