SUMMARY:Taking an Engineer's Approach to Understanding Biology
DESCRIPTION:The next breakthrough in science often comes from looking at a problem from a new angle and with new facts. In the inaugural talk of the Broad Discovery Series\, Paul Blainey and Alex Shalek will share how taking an engineering approach can allow scientists to make new types of biological measurements that help answer important questions about cells and tissues\, and can yield new\, otherwise unseeable perspectives about how living systems work. \nThis Broad Discovery Series talk will be held both in person and virtually. Those attending in person are invited to a reception in the Broad Discovery Center following the talk to celebrate the launch of both the Center and the new series

SUMMARY:Understanding How the Inflation Reduction Act Impacts the Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:The recently passed Inflation Reduction Act contains some of the most significant changes to prescription drug pricing\, reimbursement\, and access we have seen in decades. By far\, the biggest policy change is allowing Medicare to negotiate the price of drugs for the first time in the program’s history. A separate policy in the bill allows the federal government to penalize companies who raise the price of drugs faster than inflation. Initial estimates are that the various drug pricing provisions in the IRA will result in upwards of $300 billion less revenue to biopharmaceutical companies and dozens of new drugs not reaching patients in the next ten years. \nWhile the impact of this legislation on commercial-scale biopharma companies is fairly clear\, what is less understood is the downstream effects on emerging biotech companies who are seeking investments\, partnerships\, and acquisitions in the hope of one day having their science come to market. \nAt this forum\, you will learn more about the Inflation Reduction Act’s major prescription drug related provisions and explore how it will impact biotech innovation in the near and long term from our panel of experts.

SUMMARY:Why Sex Matters in Health and Disease
DESCRIPTION:David Page’s lab studies the genetic differences between males and females and the biological and medical ramifications of these differences. At the core are the sex chromosomes: females have two X chromosomes\, while males have an X and a Y. The Page Lab has overturned the long-held view that the influence of sex chromosome constitution (XX vs. XY) is restricted to the reproductive tract. Intrinsic differences between XX and XY cells exist across the body\, likely contributing to the pervasive differences that exist between males and females in the incidence\, severity\, and progression of diseases that collectively affect all organ systems. A grand opportunity awaits: To understand male-female differences in healthy cells\, tissues\, and organs\, at a molecular level and across the body. Register here.

SUMMARY:2022 Digital Health Impact
DESCRIPTION:The convergence between digital health and the life sciences is creating new opportunities to transform patient care as well as drug discovery and development. From wearables to machine learning\, digital technologies are easing data collection from patients\, increasing medical adherence\, supplementing clinical trials\, and offering new insights into real-world applications of therapies. Embedding digital health tools into the life sciences will also allow new therapies to better work within the growing value-based healthcare system that relies on data and measurable outcomes. \nJoin MassBio as we examine the current state of digital health as it relates to the life sciences\, the challenges facing its growth\, and opportunities for collaboration. Through keynotes\, panel discussions\, and case studies\, we’ll explore new strategies for therapeutics and digital health innovators to converge and ultimately deliver better outcomes for patients.

SUMMARY:The Forsyth Institute 5th Scientific Symposium: Craniofacial Biology\, Disease\, and Regeneration
DESCRIPTION:Craniofacial anomalies are the most common type of birth defect\, representing one-third of all congenital deformities. In the United States\, approximately 600\,000 individuals are diagnosed with a craniofacial condition every year. The global health care costs attributed to these conditions exceed $500 billion annually. \nThe Forsyth Institute 5th Annual Scientific Symposium: Craniofacial Biology\, Disease\, and Regeneration\, aims to promote better understanding of craniofacial development and disease\, leading to knowledge translation for disease prevention and treatment. The Symposium will bring together researchers and clinicians working on different aspects of craniofacial biology\, including but not limited to cranial neural crest development\, cell-type specification and lineage commitment\, cleft lip/palate\, craniosynostosis\, midfacial disorder\, bone and cartilage regeneration\, single-cell profiling\, and genomics. The Symposium will include poster presentations by attendees and talks by renowned leaders in the field. \nThe Symposium features four sessions: \nSession 1: Stem Cell and Fate Specification\nSession 2: Development and Disease\nSession 3: Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering\nSession 4: Emerging Research

SUMMARY:Third Annual Gilbert S. Omenn Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Microbial Genomics: From Public Health to Personalized Care \nThe last decade has witnessed an exponential increase in access to whole genome sequencing technologies that have now migrated from a research-only tool to a public health work-horse and increasingly used for guiding delivery of medical care. I will discuss applications and frontiers in pathogen genome sequencing and other ‘omics’ as tools to improve surveillance and treatment of tuberculosis across the facets of care from disease detection to antibiotic resistance diagnosis to treatment monitoring. I will specifically discuss how the use of pathogen sequencing can integrate within and circumvent resource challenges in LMICs.
