SUMMARY:Decoding Nutrition Guidance: Navigating Confusion and Trustworthiness
DESCRIPTION:Co-Presented by the Museum of Science and Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute \nIn the Information Age we have access to many sources of information to advise our everyday choices\, but how can we identify which sources we trust enough to follow or not? This is true for choices we make about what we eat. Join us for a public forum on truth\, trust\, and nutritional science. Participants will engage in round table discussions on topics such as finding credible sources of information\, what we think is trustworthy\, and reflection on challenges we face understanding food and nutrition guidance \nFree with registration. Participants will receive a $25 e-gift card approximately one month after the event.

SUMMARY:Closing Out Your Research: Managing Data Transfer Between Collaborators
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge transfer refers to sharing or disseminating knowledge and providing inputs to problem-solving. When employees leave\, they take their skills and institutional knowledge with them. Capturing their knowledge and research outputs is essential to the success of future users. \nThis session will present the knowledge transfer process and what to document at the point of employee offboarding. We will explore how individuals collect\, organize\, access\, store and share project data in order to facilitate reuse and ongoing project work. \nInstructors: Julie Goldman\, Research Data Services Librarian\, Countway Library\nSarah Marchese\, Senior Research Data Management Analyst\, HMS Research Computing

SUMMARY:Variant to Function Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 19\, 2024\n9:00 am – 7:00 pm\nMerkin Lobby and Auditorium \nLarge-scale human genetic studies have succeeded in identifying hundreds of thousands of variants associated with human diseases and traits. One of the grand challenges on the frontier of human genomics and health is to pioneer new scalable paradigms and technologies to systematically link these many variants to cellular programs and gene regulation networks driving complex disorders. This will enable a deep understanding of the genetically-anchored biological programs affected in diseases\, lay the foundation for a new generation of rationally designed medicines\, and benefit patients and societies across the globe. The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Genomic Mechanisms of Disease is thrilled to host a symposium highlighting some of the important work and progress ongoing across the vibrant Broad Institute community in this domain. Please join us for an exciting day of science and discussions around this topic. \nCo-chaired by Melina Claussnitzer and Kasper Lage \n  \nLearn more and register!

SUMMARY:Science Communication in a Crisis
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be offered at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (January 30\, 2024) and at MIT on (February 1\, 2024). \nThe twenty-first century has seen an increase in extreme weather events\, large-scale environmental disasters\, and global health pandemics. Although science has enormous value to decision-makers during such crises\, the disconnect between scientists and those who respond to and are affected by such events is enormous. \n  \nIn this workshop\, we will identify the principal challenges that scientists face when communicating with different stakeholder groups\, offer advice on how to navigate the maze of competing interests\, and deliver actionable science when the clock is ticking. \n  \nThe lead instructor will be Chris Reddy\, Senior Scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and faculty member of the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography\, and recent author of “Science Communication in a Crisis: An Insider’s Guide”. \n  \nEmail Chris Reddy (creddy@whoi.edu) to Register.

SUMMARY:Ethical Considerations of Access to Investigational Medicines
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is co-sponsored by the Research Ethics Consultation Unit of the Division of Clinical Research and the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics. Please register here to receive the Zoom details. \nDuring the development of new medicines\, manufacturers and research sponsors may be confronted with a decision about whether to provide access to a medicine that has not yet been approved for use by a health authority. This question can arise during the conduct of clinical trials when there is a gap between the end of a trial and when the medicine is available to be prescribed. Or it may come up as a request for “compassionate use” when a patient is facing a life threatening condition for which there are no available treatments. This talk will explore the ethical considerations underpinning these decisions and the importance of considering the various stakeholder perspectives. \nSpeaker:\nKarla G. Childers\, BA\, MSJ\, MSBE\, Head\, Bioethics-based Science & Technology Policy\, Office of the Chief Medical Officer at Johnson & Johnson \nKarla Childers joined Johnson & Johnson (J&J) in October 2013 in the Office of the Chief Medical Officer where her primary responsibility has been leading and coordinating various ethics-based\, science and technology policy projects. Her longest running responsibility has been the support and coordination of Johnson & Johnson’s Clinical Trial Data Transparency Initiative\, including the management of the Yale University Open Data Access (YODA) Project data sharing collaboration. \nMs. Childers is the Chair of the J&J Bioethics Committee\, which serves as an internal forum providing advice on bioethical questions within J&J. She is responsible for the management and conduct of that committee and relevant bioethics consultations. She serves as a bioethics subject matter expert for various internal and external science and technology policy work and coordinates the internal bioethics educational program sponsored by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer. \nMs. Childers has also been actively engaged outside J&J in various R&D and ethics-based work. She has volunteered in the Drug Information Association (DIA) in various roles for the past decade\, including the Annual Meeting Program Committee\, Annual Meeting Steering Committee\, and most recently co-founded the DIA Bioethics Community. She served three years on the Public Responsibility in Medicine & Research (PRIM&R) planning committee for the Advancing Ethical Research (AER) conference and continues to be an active speaker and member for PRIM&R. Most recently\, she joined the board of FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics).

SUMMARY:Methods for the Analysis of Data with Missing Values
DESCRIPTION:Frontiers in Biostatistics Seminar \nTuesday January 16\, 2023 @ 1pm ET\nCenter for Life Sciences Building\, Room 11081 \nRoderick Little\, PhD\nRichard D. Remington Distinguished University Professor of Biostatistics\nProfessor\, Department of Statistics\nResearch Professor\, Institute for Social Research\nUniversity of Michigan School of Public Health \nAbstract: I review methods for handling missing data in empirical studies. I define missing data\, provide a taxonomy of main approaches to analysis\, including complete-case and available-case analysis\, weighting\, maximum likelihood (ML)\, Bayes\, single and multiple imputation (MI)\, and augmented inverse-probability weighting (AIPW). Assumptions about the missingness mechanism are key to the performance of alternative methods; I define missingness mechanisms\, which play a key role in the performance of methods. Approaches to robust inference\, and to inference when the mechanism is potentially missing not at random\, are discussed. I’ll also discuss recent developments in the treatment of missing data in interventional studies\, as evidenced by the International Council for Harmonization E9 Addendum on estimands. \nVisit the website to get the Zoom link and add to your calendar.
