SUMMARY:Research on Tap: Wearables and Biosensors for Environmental and Human Health
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Catherine Klapperich \nSensitive and more portable sensing platforms will allow us to quantify and predict how the world around us impacts human health and the environment. Monitoring the various chemicals and biomolecules around us and in our bodies is important in a wide range of disciplines including human development and disease\, epidemiology\, climate change\, food safety\, water management\, and many others. \nFor this Research on Tap\, we will bring together researchers from medicine\, public health\, engineering\, biology\, physics\, chemistry\, and environmental and data sciences to explore how new biosensing technologies and data analytics can drive new hypotheses and solutions for better health. \nFeaturing: Karen Allen | James Galagan | Christopher Gill | Matti Groll | Rebecca Khurshid | Yannis Paschalidis | Reza Rawassizadeh | Rob Reinhart | David Starobinski | Selim Ünlü

SUMMARY:Hit Me with Your Best Shot: Vaccines and COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:With an estimated 35 million infected and over 1 million deaths\, SARS-CoV-2 has ravaged the world. We are waiting for scientists to produce a life-saving vaccine that can prevent the serious illness COVID-19 and help bring this pandemic to an end. Currently\, there are nearly 200 different vaccines in various stages of development. How does SARS-CoV-2 cause disease\, and how do vaccines work to prevent us from getting sick? How are scientists and manufacturers working together to safely speed up the vaccine development process which typically takes years? In this lecture\, we will discuss how we can enable the immune system to fight serious infection. \nTime: 6:30-8:30 p.m.\, Wednesday\, December 2nd \nJoin us on: Zoom (password: Seminar) or YouTube Live \nSpeaker: Aly Warr \nGraphics: Iryna Stryapunina

SUMMARY:Dana Farber Targeted Protein Degradation Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Small-molecule-induced protein polymerization\n\nMikolaj Slabicki\, Hojong Yoon\, Jonas Koeppel \nDecember 3rd\, 2020  \nWebinar registration: \nhttps://dfci.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_rOAQV4c8Tge2bXW23l9rYQ \nHost: Katherine Donovan \n\n\nResearchers from the Ebert and Fischer lab teamed up to solve the elusive mechanism of a BCL6 degrader\, BI-3802. By employing functional screens\, biochemical dissection\, and structural characterization\, they identified that BI-3802 induces BCL6 polymerization\, which triggers proteasomal degradation of BCL6. The seminar will be presented by Mikolaj Slabicki (Ebert Lab)\, Hojong Yoon (Fischer Lab)\, and Jonas Koeppel (Ebert Lab).

SUMMARY:BioPharma Manufacturing In Massachusetts: A Talent Powerhouse Continues To Fuel Growth
DESCRIPTION:Massachusetts has long been the epicenter of biopharma research and development. Years of investment and collaboration between industry\, academia\, and government has provided biopharma manufacturers a rich and deep talent landscape in Massachusetts. Join leaders in the biopharma industry and higher education as they discuss current talent development assets\, share initiatives to grow talent even further\, and look to the future as the industry continues its growth in Massachusetts. \nThis virtual Forum\, hosted in partnership by MassBio\, MassECON\, MassBioEd\, and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center\, will include an overview of current biopharma talent assets and how the pool of talent has grown in recent years\, followed by an industry-higher education panel that will share case studies on collaboration and insights on what is on the horizon for new talent development.\nNOTE: MassBio makes every effort to accommodate our entire community at each of our events. Please let us know at least 3 days in advance of the event if you require special accommodations\, such as captioning.

SUMMARY:Dana Farber Targeted Protein Degradation Seminar
DESCRIPTION:What makes two proteins stick: dissecting molecular glue action\nWebinar registration:\nhttps://dfci.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Hr3R9LRoRUagwczvrWsO7g \nHost: Mikolaj Slabicki \n\n\nNicolas H. Thomä \n\n\nThe Thomä laboratory is interested in chromatin-bound machines and their regulation by the ubiquitin proteasome system. Guided by structural biology\, we use a range of genetic\, chemical and complex biochemical reconstitution tools to study protein function in genome maintenance and transcription. A particular focus is on dissecting how chromatin and the ubiquitin transferase system interplay. In recent years\, the lab worked towards understanding how proteins\, such as ubiquitin ligases\, can be re-programmed by small molecules\, and how this insight can be used to develop novel drugs. \nDr Nicolas Thomä is a group leader at the Friedrich Miescher Institute in Basel\, Switzerland. He is an elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and of Academia Europeana. Dr Thomä is the recipient of the Novartis Leading Scientist Award and holds an ERC Advanced Grant.
