SUMMARY:Leadership Development for Physicians in Academic Health Centers
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\nAcademic health centers in the United States are experiencing major change as a result of the effects of health reform and financial pressures. In addition to the restructuring of the clinical enterprise\, academic centers are being challenged to sustain their academic missions and priorities in the face of resource constraints. In order to tackle these challenges\, institutions need physicians in administrative positions at all levels who can provide leadership and thoughtful managerial initiatives. \nFor over forty years Harvard has conducted intensive two-week executive development programs designed specifically for chairs\, chiefs\, and medical directors in clinical departments at major teaching hospitals. During that time\, leaders from institutions in all regions of the United States have participated in and praised these unique educational programs. \nLeadership Development for Physicians in Academic Health Centers is designed to serve a wide array of physician leaders. It convenes medical directors and chiefs of divisions from academic health centers together with an interdisciplinary faculty team for two weeks of intensive and systematic study of the critical leadership and management issues faced by physicians in administrative positions and academic health centers. \nCurriculum \nThe curriculum is organized around the following interrelated courses taught by a faculty experienced in executive education for physicians and other key decision-makers in the health system: \n\nInstitutional Strategy\nFinancial Analysis\nOperations Management\nOrganizational Issues\nConflict Resolution and Negotiation\nLeadership\nHealth Policy\n\nA carefully integrated curriculum permits participants to examine fundamental leadership and managerial issues from the perspective of several disciplines. The overriding purpose for learning concepts\, techniques and skills in any of the management disciplines in this program is to understand their managerial use and limitations. \nTeaching Methods \nThe principal method of instruction in the program is the case method\, a technique pioneered and refined at the Harvard Business School. Most of the cases present actual problem situations familiar to physicians in administrative positions at academic health centers. \nThe case method confronts the participant with an actual management problem\, halted at a point where decisions must be made\, and empowers the participant to choose a course of action. \nParticipants go through a three-step study process. First\, participants study each case independently. Then they meet in small discussion groups to test their individual analysis against those of their peers. Lastly\, the entire class discusses the case\, with the professor as a catalyst and guide. The professor points out considerations the class has overlooked; elicits from participants the lessons of experience; pursues each line of investigation to its conclusion; and finally\, summarizes the discussion and draws out the major lessons it has taught. \nAssigned readings and guest lecturers supplement and augment the use of cases. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School. This symposium will highlight the groundbreaking work that has come out of Boston  autism collaborations and set the stage for the future of autism research in our community. \nThis conference\, sponsored by the Anne and Paul Marcus Family foundation\, is open to scientists and physicians from academia\, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries\, disease-based foundations\, and the government and will include distinguished speakers\, a breakout discussion on the future of autism research and poster reception. \nThis year’s all-day event will feature successful collaborations that arose from the Boston Autism Community\, from Drs. Charles Nelson & Mark Bear on Fragile X Syndrome\, Drs. Issac Kohane & Mustafa Sahin on Tuberous Sclerosis Complex\, Drs. Mriganka Sur & Ann Graybiel on Rett Syndrome\, Drs. Rosalind Picard & Terrie Inder on Autism and  Dr. Mark Daly on 16p11 Syndrome. \nOur Keynote Address will be given by Dr. Joseph Buxbaum\, Mount Sinai School of Medicine. \nCapstone Event  In addition to our regular agenda\, this year the symposium will feature a novel breakout session entitled “Laying Seeds for the Future” in which participants will have the opportunity to debate the future of neurodevelopmental research and establish the new collaborations with key opinion leaders in the field.

We will create a link for uploading with relevant instructions and send via your registered email.\nParticipants will be matched ** IN ADVANCE** to read statements – usually in pairs. DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\nEnrollment and Retention in IO studies: Patient and Site Centricity \nAbstract \nEnrollment and patient retention remain the most significant barriers to executing successful randomized clinical trials for sponsor companies today\, impacting timeline\, quality\, and budget.  More than 80% of clinical studies fail to complete enrollment on time\, and approximately half of the sites selected for clinical trials enroll between zero and one patient. \nOvercoming the recruitment challenge requires a sponsor’s delicate coordination of multiple stakeholders\, all of whom have different goals and motivations:  CROs\, vendors\, regulators\, and the two most important partners\, investigators and the patients they are treating. \n  \nRapid developments in the immuno-oncology (IO) field in recent years offer both a challenge and an opportunity for drug developers to design and execute trials with patients and sites in mind (“patient and site centricity”).  The FDA has also evolved in its own patient engagement approach with programs like the Patient-Focused Drug Development (PFDD) initiative. \nKelly Brady\, Vice President\, Clinical Operations Seres Therapeutics \nKelly holds a BS degree in Neuroscience from Lafayette College\, and an MS in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins where she began her career as a research associate in the Orthopaedic Oncology department.   Kelly  has held positions  of increasing responsibility in Clinical Operations and Clinical Program management over the past 12 years. \n  \nAs a clinical associate at Osiris Therapeutics\, Kelly managed global  pediatric and hematology projects (GVHD\, COPD)\, and was a member of the operational and submission team who worked on Prochymal\, an allogeneic stem cell therapy  which received approval for treatment of GVHD in children in Canada in 2012.  Following Osiris\,  Kelly moved to Millenium/Takeda where she was global phase 3 clinical leader for the Adcetris trials in Hodgkins Lymphoma\,  in conjunction with Seattle Genetics\, run in 29 countries.  Kelly then held positions in Operations and Program management at Acetylon\, and was a member of the team involved in the acquisition of the company by Celgene.  Prior to joining Seres\,  Kelly was  Senior Director\, Global Clinical Program Lead at Akebia\, overseeing the pivotal program including 4 Phase 3  cardiovascular outcomes studies in 27 countries\, and initiated a Clinical Trial Educator program in North America. \n  \nKelly continues to be active with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society\, and lives in Cambridge with her husband.
