SUMMARY:MIT Biology Catalyst Symposium
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, the department\, with leadership from the Faculty DEI Committee and DEI Officer\, launched the MIT Biology Catalyst Symposium.  This symposium is part of a new effort to bring outstanding postdocs from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in science to engage with members of our community. Aimed specifically at postdocs pursuing academic careers\, the three-day symposium provides a venue for participants to share their research\, discuss exciting new directions\, and make new professional connections. We will welcome eight Catalyst Fellows to campus for the first symposium in May of 2023.

DESCRIPTION:Vicki Sato\, PhD\, is a biologist\, immunologist\, and biotechnology executive with decades of experience leading teams in drug research and development. Molecules and therapeutics developed under her leadership have become critical treatments for HIV\, cystic fibrosis\, inflammation\, multiple sclerosis\, and Hepatitis C. \n\nFormer President and former Chief Science Officer of Vertex Pharmaceuticals\, one of the first biotechnology companies to exploit structure-based and computational chemistries in the design of new drugs.\nFormer Vice President of Research at Biogen\, leading research programs in the areas of inflammation\, thrombosis\, and HIV.\nFormer Professor of the Practice at Harvard University in Molecular and Cell Biology\, teaching the science of making medicines.\nFormer Professor at Harvard Business School where her work focused on productivity and innovation in biotechnology and pharmaceutical R&D.\nInaugural Co-Chair of the Advisory Council for the NYC LifeScience initiative for the Economic Development Corporation of the city of New York\, which is focused on driving economic growth and jobs by expanding the life science sector in the city.\nMember of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).\n\nAbout Whitehead Connects \nFeaturing prominent biotech\, pharma\, healthcare\, and venture capital leaders discussing the most important developments\, challenges\, and opportunities facing the biomedical science enterprise — the Whitehead Connects speaker series sparks dialogue and connection among members of the broader Whitehead Institute\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, Kendall Square\, and Boston bioscience communities.
