SUMMARY:Nobel Laureate Shinya Yamanaka\, MD\, PhD\, Presents "Recent Progress in iPS Cell Research and Application"
DESCRIPTION:When\nWednesday\, June 9\, 2021\, 7 – 8pm\n\n\nWhere\nRegister\n\n\nSpeaker Name\nDr. Shinya Yamanaka\, MD\, PhD\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\nNobel Laureate Shinya Yamanaka will present “Recent Progress in iPS Cell Research and Application\,” on June 9\, 2021. This forum\, which is free and open to the public\, will launch Harvard’s Annual Bioethics Conference (ABC). The annual conference includes access to this forum and two additional days of programming. Learn more or register for ABC here.\nIn 2006\, Shinya Yamanaka discovered that adult somatic cells can be reprogrammed into an embryonic-like pluripotent state by delivering transcription factors. These reprogrammed cells\, known as induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells\, have the potential to develop into every cell type in the body and are invaluable tools for disease modeling\, drug screening\, and cell therapy. iPS cells also provide an unprecedented opportunity for discovery in life science\, and in Yamanaka’s lab today\, researchers continue to use them to investigate the mechanisms for cell fate determination\, the reprogramming process\, and pluripotency. Yamanaka is the 2012 winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. \n\n\n\nLink\nevents.constantcontact.com…

SUMMARY:Biotechnology and the Future of Medicine
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Annual Bioethics Conference will take place online June 9-11 and will explore the potential of biotechnology to drive and shape the future of clinical care and research. \nThe practice of medicine over the course of the last fifty years has changed dramatically. Novel technological developments will continue to generate new discoveries\, therapies\, and patient outcomes. Recent advances in intertwined areas\, such as stem cell-based bioengineering\, organoid technology\, low-cost personal genome sequencing\, machine learning\, and human genome editing have the potential to create more effective\, personalized medical treatments. But as we progress toward this biotechnologically-driven medical future\, we must consider how ethical values can shape these advancements and vice versa. This online conference will examine how ethics interacts with biotechnology in medicine\, and consider multiple approaches to how we might ensure that biotechnology continues to evolve ethically and for the benefit of all. \nRegister here to attend the 2021 Annual Bioethics Conference\nSign-up to receive email updates about the conference schedule\, speakers\, and poster session.
